U.S. News & World Report has released its annual list of best places to live in the country. To top the list, a place must earn high scores in criteria, such as desirability and quality of life. For 2022, Huntsville, AL was chosen as the number one U.S. city to live in.
Home to about 200,000 people, Huntsville scored highly for its housing affordability and quality of life. Housing costs in Alabama’s largest city are significantly lower than other major metro areas around the country, with property costing an average of $192,667 compared to the national average of $315,743.

The report analyzed the 150 largest metropolitan areas and ranked them based on a blend of metrics, such as net migration, unemployment rate, annual housing costs, average commute time, air quality index, and more. The percent weighting for each index follows the answers from a March 2022 public survey in which people from across the country voted for what they believed was the most important factor to consider when choosing where to live
