Spring Cleaning the Exterior of Your Home

Spring is a time of renewal. The grass will grow greener, daffodils and tulips will start popping up, and vibrant colors will replace the gray of winter. And as the weather begins to warm up, we will have many excellent opportunities to spend time outdoors. With a little elbow grease, you can create some serious and stunning curb appeal.

Follow these simple spring-cleaning tips for the exterior of your home:

Windows – Winter weather can leave the exterior of your windows covered in residue, which can prevent spring sunshine from pouring natural light into your home. To clean them, remove the screens to your windows and hose them off. Next, use a squeegee and cleaning solution to tackle the glass. If you have second story – or higher – windows on your home, you may need to hire a professional to clean the exteriors. For more details on cleaning your windows, click here.

Siding  – If your home has vinyl siding, you may have noticed a buildup of mold, mildew, or pollen. Most hardware and home improvement stores rent pressure washers that can help remove this, or you can hire someone to pressure wash the exterior of your home. Driveways and Sidewalks  – Concrete driveways and sidewalks can collect mildew over time, making them appear dingy and unsightly. Make the most out of your rented pressure washer and clean these, too. Begin with a degreaser, followed by a cleaning solution and a sealant.

Gutters – The gutters on your home can become clogged with leaves, dirt, and other debris. Cleaning your gutters will allow the rainwater from spring showers to flow freely without causing damage to your gutters or your home. Remove all materials clogging your gutters and then flush the gutters with a hose.

Trees and Bushes – Trimming trees and bushes improves the look of your home's exterior while helping to  prevent damage from overgrown branches. Use a pair of pruning shears or a hedge trimmer to trim back any branches or bushes that are overgrown.
