Due to their economical cost and low maintenance, many homes are equipped with vinyl shutters rather than traditional wood. While vinyl shutters have many advantages, their color can fade over time with sun exposure. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars to replace them, why not repaint them for a fresh, new look?

Follow the tips below to make repainting your vinyl shutters a breeze:

1. Clean –  Begin by thoroughly cleaning the shutters. While it may be tempting to use a pressure washer for efficiency, this can damage the shutters. Hand-wash your vinyl shutters with a mixture of one-part bleach and four-parts water to remove mold and mildew. Next, rinse the shutters with a detergent solution and let them air dry completely before proceeding with paint.




2. Choose paint –  To avoid peeling, use paint that is 100% acrylic latex. It is also wise to apply a latex primer before applying the paint. Visit your local home improvement store for advice on selecting the correct paint.




3. Apply paint –  If you are leaving the shutters attached to your home while you paint them, surround the area with Painter’s Tape before you begin to protect your home’s siding and windows. Using a brush made from synthetic materials, begin painting the slats at the top of the shutter and work your way down. Next, move on to painting the side edges and face of the frame. Avoid painting in direct sunlight and be sure to read the instructions to determine drying time. Once the paint has dried completely, apply another coat if necessary.
