Prepare For Guests With These Holiday Cleaning Tips

Holiday hosting is a big job and can be stressful if you don’t do the prep work ahead of time. Entertaining guests involves planning the menu, grocery shopping, cooking, and making sure the house is clean. The best way to go about your to-do list is to stagger your tasks in the week leading up to the holidays so you don’t feel overwhelmed.

But you don’t need to do a deep cleaning of your entire home. With so much going on during this busy season, you must think strategically. These holiday cleaning tips will help you prioritize your chores so you can concentrate on areas that your guests will frequent.

The outdoor areas

  • Remove any debris and dispose of leaves and fallen branches along the driveway and walkways.

  • If there is snow on the ground, make sure that your driveway and walkways are clear. If you live in a snow-heavy region, consider investing in a snowblower to get the job done faster.

  • Check your outdoor holiday decorations like string lights and inflatables to ensure they are in working order.

The entryway

  • Pick up clutter near the door.

  • Designate a spot for guests to leave their shoes and coats.

  • Wipe down walls and doors to remove scuffs and marks.

  • Wash all windows and vacuum window screens.

The living room

  • Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors.

  • Spot-clean any stains on carpet, area rugs, or furniture.

  • Wipe down surfaces with a microfiber duster or damp cloth.

  • Fluff pillows and fold throw blankets

  • Remove clutter and donate or store out of sight.

The kitchen

  • Declutter and wipe down countertops.

  • Vacuum or sweep floors.

  • Clear any dirty dishes from the sink and clean the basin.

  • Wipe down kitchen appliances.

  • Replace kitchen hand towels.

  • Make room in the refrigerator for leftovers.

The bathroom(s)

  • Use glass cleaner to remove streaks from mirrors.

  • Sweep and mop the floor.

  • Wipe down the sink and countertops.

  • Clean out the medicine cabinet (in case guests take a peek inside) and remove personal products from the vanity.

  • Refill soap dispensers and lotions and make sure that the toilet paper roll is full and that more rolls are easily available.

  • Set out fresh towels.
