Choosing the Right Window Treatments

When it comes to window treatments for your home, the options can be overwhelming. Adding the right treatments to a room can really define the style and make the décor pop, but how do you know which are best? Window treatments provide both decorative touches and functionality, so it is important to make sure you have the best of both. Here are some of the most popular types of window treatments:

Drapes  – These window treatments are structured floor-length fabric panels that hang on a rod attached to the wall and provide a formal look.

Curtains  – Curtains hang from a rod attached to a wall but offer a more relaxed style than drapes. Curtains often drop below a windowsill and are of a lighter fabric.

Shades  – Attached to a rod or frame at the top, shades are also made of fabric and use a lifting mechanism to raise and lower the panel. The fabric will either roll around a rod or bunch up in a stack.

Blinds  – Much like shades, blinds are attached to a frame and use a lifting mechanism. Hard slats tilt to let light in. Rather than fabric, blinds can be made of many materials, including bamboo, plastic, wood, aluminum, vinyl and more. Many different types of blinds are available, so check out  this article  for more information.

Plantation Shutters  – What started as an exterior treatment in the Old South to protect a home from heat and sun is now used as an interior window covering. Plantation shutters usually have wider louvers than blinds and are made of materials such as vinyl, composite or wood. A rod fixture allows these shutters to open and close on a window.
