Air filters are a crucial component to your home’s HVAC system. Most houses are fitted with at least two filters that remove bacteria and other harmful particles from the air that circulates through your home. Clean air filters not only keep the HVAC system healthy, but they also keep the people, pets, and belongings in your home healthy. Additionally, keeping your air filters clean will lower your energy bill, as clogged air filters make the HVAC system work harder.
Air filters should be changed every three months at a minimum. If you have pets or dust allergies, changing the filters every 1-2 months will likely benefit you. Air filters are found on the inside of home return vents, which are generally located on the wall or ceiling and often close to the home thermostat. Before you purchase new air filters, you will need to determine the required size. If there is an old air filter in the return vent, the size is likely printed on it. Be sure to check all returns, as many homes require multiple sizes. If there is not an old filter, you can measure the length and width of the return vent in inches to determine the size.
Once you have purchased the correctly sized filters, you are ready to install them in the returns. Most return vents have a tab that you pull to open. Remove the old filter by gently pulling it out of position and place the new one in following the directional arrows on the vent. Close the vent and make sure that it snaps into place.
